Technical description

A windom antenna is an asymmetrical lambda/2 dipole. The feed point is not in the middle like a regular dipole, but at about one third of the length. The length of the two sides is about lambda/3 and lambda/6 respectively. The aim is to be able to use a dipole on several bands. To do this, a point is sought on the half-wave dipole that offers approximately the same impedance for all bands that lie harmonically to each other. This is the case at about 1/3 of the length of the longest band for which this antenna is intended. Since the impedance at the feed point also depends on the height above ground, an optimal result cannot be expected in all cases. In some cases, a tuner must be used, but the tuner built into many transceivers should be sufficient.

The balun used in a Windom antenna can be set up with either a 1:6 or 1:4 ratio. EAntenna has chosen a transmission ratio of 1:4 to keep the construction as light and simple as possible, even for high powers. The balun has a PL socket, and variants for 1500 or 3000 W PEP are available.

Application description

Due to its unproblematic behaviour, the Windom antenna enjoys great popularity among many radio amateurs, whether for portable or stationary use. The asymmetrically arranged feed point offers an advantage in many cases, because the feed line to the house is shorter and thus the weight of the cable is reduced. The Windom antenna can be hung straight or angled, and a sloper or inverted-vee configuration is also possible. As always, the feed point should be mounted as high as possible, e.g. on the gable of the house or on a mast on top of the house.

The SWR of the Windom antenna is below 1:2 over wide ranges and can therefore be operated without a tuner. However, the exact ratios depend on the height above ground, the ground conductivity, etc. The bands that are harmonious to each other can be used, i.e. 160,80,40,20,15,10 m. If one accepts a lower efficiency, the bands 12, 17 or 30m can also be used when using the tuner. Another extension possibility is to add a second dipole parallel or at 90° to the Windom antenna.
