Technical description
The antennas offered here are actually correctly called double Zepp or doublet antennas. The 'real' Zepp antenna consisted of only one leg, the two-wire feed line was connected to this wire on only one side. The name comes from early airship travel: on a Zeppelin, such antennas were lowered during the flight because they only had to be attached at one end. The other end hung free.
The double-zepp is lambda/2 long for the longest operating band. The impedance at the feed point of the dipole is transformed by feeding it with a two-wire cable of at least lambda/4 length, and a tuner - preferably a true symmetrical one - is always used for operation. Alternatively, operation with a 1:4 or 1:1 balun is conceivable, depending on the band. It is also possible to use an automatic tuner like the CG-3000, Icom AH-4, Yaesu FC-40 or MFJ-993BRT/-994BRT/-998RT.
The feed line should be a high-impedance two-wire line, which should be routed as vertically as possible away from the dipole. The length of the feed line can be chosen arbitrarily, but it should be at least lambda/4 for the longest band. Since no elements such as coils, blocking circuits or baluns are used, this antenna is well suited for high power and promises high operational reliability.
Application description
The classic double-zepp antenna (aka doublet) is popular because of its robustness, even if you need a little more space. By dispensing with all components such as coils, baluns and blocking circuits, the Zepp antenna offers high operational reliability.
The advantage of the double-zepp antenna is that it can be set up in many different ways. The dipole can, of course, be hung stretched, but if the available space does not allow it otherwise, it can also be hung as an inverted vee, angled in a U- or Z-shape, in an L-shape or even as a vertical antenna.
The radiation is strongly dependent on the height above ground. Surprisingly, a very high height is not necessary to achieve a flat radiation - well suited for long-distance traffic. With higher suspension or when used as a sloper, inverted-vee, etc., the antenna has a stronger steep radiation and is thus well suited for local traffic. Two-wire feed line must still be added for operation, and a tuner is a prerequisite. This tuner should ideally be symmetrical. If this is not available, operation with a 1:4 or 1:1 balun is possible.
