Technical description

The "OP-DES" (Opposing Phase Driven Element System) Yagi antennas are a relatively new development from InnovAntennas. The dipole radiator of these antennas is angled backwards parallel to the boom. This results in opposing phase relationships in the two side panels, providing a very clean directivity pattern with few side lobes. The result is very good gain over a wide frequency range, with a good front-to-back ratio.

The dipole of an OP-DES antenna has a low impedance of 50 ohms. This eliminates the need for matching elements, all transformations take place in the dipole itself. For this reason, the antenna is offered without a balun, but a cladding wave blocker can be used without any problems.

The coaxial cable is directly connected to the dipole, thus power levels of 5 kW and more are possible. Like all InnovAntennas Yagis, the OP-DES antennas are extremely robustly constructed, the larger model uses guy wires for the boom. All elements of the antenna use high quality aluminum, the clamps and screws are made of stainless steel. The supplied mast clamp is designed for masts up to 50mm diameter.

Application description

Monoband yagis are often used at contest stations, or when you want to use only one band for a certain time, for example to focus on a specific target during sunspot minimum. Another advantage of monoband antennas are the stacking possibilities, i.e. the arrangement of several similar antennas on top of each other. Here, the InnovAntennas Yagis provide all the necessary technical specifications, no more guesswork on the stick spacing.

The InnovAntennas OP-DES Yagis are designed through careful numerical optimizations to provide excellent gain with good bandwidth. As a result, a low SWR of 1.1:1 is achieved in the frequency range of 50.0 - 50.6 MHz (6-element) or 50.0 - 51.35 MHz (5-element). The manifold experiences of the developer Justin, G0KSC ensure a smooth use of the antennas in practice, often supported by a lively exchange with the users.

InnovAntennas (UK) was founded in 2010 by Justin Johnson, G0KSC. Justin is a well-known antenna designer and inventor of the LFA (Loop Fed Yagi), OP-DES (Opposing Phase Driven Element System) Yagi and the OWL (Optimised Wideband Low impedance) Yagi. In addition to running the company, Justin presents at antenna forums around the world, including regular participation in the Dayton Hamvention Antenna Forum and contributing to the pages of the ARRL Antenna Book. The production and exclusive distribution of the antennas has been largely outsourced to WiMo (Germany) since 2019.
