Technical description

The Tuner Genius XL is a fully automatic antenna tuner for high power and for any transceiver. The maximum transmit power is 2000 W PEP (6m: 1500 W). Tuning is done with a reduced power of min. 10 to max. 200 watts. The tuner automatically matches antennas with an SWR of up to 1:10. For antennas with unfavourable SWR, the transmitting power must be reduced, see table. Once L/C combinations have been found, they are stored, so the tuning time for known frequencies is only 20 ms. With unknown frequencies, tuning can take between 2 and 12 seconds.

Various protective devices facilitate operation and prevent damage to the Tuner Genius. For example, it warns of too low drive power, signals outside the permissible frequency range, too high SWR and too high power. The colour 4.5" LC display shows the operating status and the operation (touch display). Front panel controls also allow manual tuning or antenna switching.

A wide range of remote control options are available. A LAN connection ensures very easy integration into your own station, for example when using transceivers of the FlexRadio FR-6000 series, also together with the PowerGenius power amplifier.
Other interfaces such as RS232 (serial) or CI-V (Icom) or band signals (pin to band) allow the use of the Tuner Genius with almost any transceiver. Even without CAT control, the internal frequency counter can automate most tasks.

The Tuner Genius is supplied with 12 - 16 VDC (max. 2A), all RF connectors are PL sockets with Teflon insulation.

There are two versions to choose from:

  • FR-TGXL-S2: SO2R (Síngle Op, 2 Radio) with a switch matrix for two transceivers and two antennas with automatic antenna selection.
  • FR-TGXL-X3: for one transceiver and three antennas selected automatically or manually

Application description

This exceptional tuner from the 'Signature' series was developed by 4O3A as part of its collaboration with FlexRadio. The Genius tuner is an ideal match for the Flex-6000 series transceivers, also together with the Power Genius PA. However, the tuner can just as easily be used with any other transceiver.

Due to the high degree of automation, the hectic COntest operation is greatly simplified. The genius tuner is also available in a "SO2R" version (Single Op, 2 Radio). Here, two transceivers and two antennas can be connected at the same time; switching is done via remote control by LAN. serial interface or individual signals from the transceivers. Alternatively, the tuner is available in a "1x3" version. version, where one transceiver and up to three antennas are connected. During operation, one or the other antenna is selected depending on the band.

In general, the operation can be fully automatic; due to the large variety of interfaces, almost all makes of shortwave radios can be used. In parallel, manual operation is of course also possible at any time. The touch display (4.5 inch LCD) and three rotary controls ensure clear operation of the Genius tuner.

The wide tuning range allows the operation of antennas up to an SWR of 10:1, but in extreme conditions only with reduced power.  Depending on the frequency, up to 2000 W PEP is possible even with a mismatch of up to 5:1.
